Chapter 16
Tuesday
November 1
Decades before, Erinâs grandfather had set up a large family trust. In 2008, when the real estate market crashed, the Barrettes used the inheritance Erin received from her grandfather to buy a sizable chunk of property from a failed summer camp on the largest lake in New Hampshire. It was the same trust fund her younger brother had used to purchase his farm in Indiana. `
Hauling the heavily laden trailer behind the Travelall, Paul pulled into the driveway slowly, wondering what they would find. Would Rob be here? Would he be okay? The family home sat well back from the road, concealed behind a thick wall of trees. Man, I love this place and the way the driveway disappears into the tree line. It looks like a path to nowhere, Paul thought for the thousandth time. No one would ever suspect whatâs back here. Beyond the trees, the property opened up to sunny fields, a large farmhouse, a detached log cabin, and an ample-sized pole barn.
Erin wondered the same thing. What would they find? Was Rob okay?
Rob Taylor, a disabled Afghanistan vet, was a trusted family friend who lived rent-free at the lake house year-round as a caretaker. Online real estate scams and squatters were always a concern when the house was unoccupied. When their oldest son, Michael, introduced Rob to the family a couple of years ago, it was a solution that benefited everyone.
Rob had not only seen some terrible things in Afghanistan, but heâd been severely wounded during an operation that had gone bad. His helicopter was ambushed, requiring a second crew to rescue them. Nightmares about the men whoâd been lost in the altercation tormented him. The physical wounds had eventually healed, but the psychological wounds ran deep and he struggled with PTSD. The quiet and somewhat remote lake house where he could fish and hunt gave him the respite he had been seeking.
Freyja, Robâs German Shepherd, came tearing around the corner of the house, barking furiously as the vehicles rolled up to the house. She slid to a stop and the tone of her bark changed to one of greeting when she recognized them. Almost before the Jimmy came to a stop, Ben hopped out, dropped to his knees, and grabbed the dog around the neck in a hug. Freyja was faithful to Rob, but Ben was her second favorite person in the world. She was so excited she pushed him off balance, landing him flat on his back in the dirt. Everyone watching burst out laughing.
âBenâs girlfriend is pushing him around again!â Aislinn yelled and jumped away so Ben couldnât smack her in the leg as he wrestled on the ground with Freyja. Suddenly, Freyja went still. Then, nose circling the air, clearly having picked up an unfamiliar scent, her eyes locked on Lauren.
âWhat do you smell, Freyja? What is it?â Lauren said, teasing the dog. Holding Rambo close, she squatted and let Freyja sniff the kitten. Rambo arched her little back, puffed
